A full day visit to the museum runs from 10 am to 2 pm. During the visit the children will split into groups which rotate around 3 different sessions. Each session is delivered by an enthusiastic member of our experienced education team. There are 5 sessions available to choose from.
Session 1: Paradise Mill tour
The children are taken on a tour around Paradise Mill by an experienced tour guide. On the tour they will see how important the Silk industry was to Macclesfield and also consider what life was like working in a Victorian mill.
The children will be provided with costumes to wear for their mill tour.
There is currently no lift access to the mill and it is accessed by a number of steps. Due to the walk to the mill and the height of the machinery we do not recommend this session for children younger than Year 2.
Session 2: Object Handling
In this session the children get to handle Victorian objects. They will complete a number of tasks in which they compare and contrast old and new objects. There will also be an opportunity to play with some Victorian toys.
Session 3: Rag Rug Making
Each child will make their own rag rug using a rag rugger tool. They will discuss the materials that would have been used, why rag rugs were made and who by.
Session 4: Victorian Childhood
In this fun session the children will learn about what life was like for Victorian children. They will have a go at using slate boards and pencils, identify the differences between toys played with by wealthy and poor Victorian children, and learn some parlour games. There will be an opportunity for them to play with the Victorian toys. This session is most appropriate for KS1 pupils.
Session 5: Victorian Illusions – craft activity
In this session the children will make their own Victorian toy; a thaumatrope. They will get to see Victorian illusions before making their own toy. This session is most appropriate for KS1 pupils.
Suitable for KS1 and KS2.
We do not currently recommend the mill tour for younger visitors given the steps to get there and the height of the machinery. For younger children we recommend a focus on Victorian childhood with the Object Handling, Victorian Childhood and Victorian Illusions activities. We will break the day up with shorter sessions and times for singing.
