At the announcement of lockdown, the Silk Heritage Trust was embarking on a project that would see the Old Sunday School begin to transform into a creative hub for Macclesfield, with 2000sq ft of space being freed up for use as a place where local people can create and participate in culture.
We had secured funding from Cheshire East’s New Homes Bonus Fund and from the Architectural Heritage Fund to start developing our plans with an exciting programme of public engagement and consultation.
And then we had to close our doors ….
We have just received the very exciting news of a generous award from Arts Council England’s emergency funding will support us in making progress on this transformational project during lockdown.
We hope that it will help lay the foundations for a space that will bring a sense of hope to Macclesfield; go some way to kick start an economic revival in the town.
Macclesfield’s beating Heart
We have seen over the past few months a new community spirit emerge in our towns and cities. Building on these strong foundations we want the Old Sunday School, a landmark building, to be at the Heart of Macclesfield’s regeneration. We want it to be a space where this can happen.
Over the coming months we’ll be preparing to transform our wonderfully bright, spacious building into a place where communities can create, try something new, work, hold meetings, explore new ideas, hear talks and most important of all – have fun!
We want The Old Sunday School to be at the Heart of a new, even more creative Macclesfield.
We want to find out what you want the building to do, what you want to see happen inside, what you want it to look like and what you’d like to do here. We’ll be starting the conversation in the next couple of weeks on the Macclesfield Museums facebook page – so why not join in?
Once we have all your ideas we’ll start exploring and testing them in the late Summer, early Autumn when you’ll have the opportunity to help us create a programme that achieves everything we’ve all set out to do.
Help us make the The Old Sunday School the beating ‘Heart of Macclesfield’ … more information in the coming weeks
